Description

Explosive population
Jewish people from Germany have been welcome here since before the war. And when war violence really broke out in 1940, the population of Aalten rose even faster. Disproportionately fast, even. Because while in the rest of the Netherlands an average of 5% of the population is in hiding, in Aalten this is four times as much: there is one person in hiding for every five inhabitants!

uncle Jan
Jan Wikkerink is best known for his help to people in hiding. Age plays no role in this. The youngest was placed in a box on his doorstep in September 1943. The parents of the newly born Jewish boy are in hiding and a baby is too risky. Uncle Jan arranges a 'purely Aryan' declaration and gives him the name Willem (after Queen Wilhelmina) Herfstink. After the war, the child is registered again, now under his real name. Wikkerink himself was arrested by the SS a year later but managed to escape. He himself went into hiding until the liberation.

Smart trading
Smart traders respond to needs, even during war. For example, the Gorinchem steel construction company De Vries, Robbé en Co offers ready-made air raid shelters. The van der Kamp family at number 7 orders 'One family shelter, type B4'. The built-in model is made of steel and must be covered with a thick layer of soil. You provide the mattresses and supplies yourself. Most families simply take shelter in their basement.
