Bredevoort breathes history. The past is seamlessly intertwined with the current cityscape. In the 12th century, a castle was built on a sandbank near a broad ford, a ford in the swamp. This was an attractive location for merchants from Germany, but it was also a good location to protect the Netherlands against attacks from the east. The castle grew into a fortress with six strongholds that had names such as Treurniet and Vreesniet. Four centuries later, the castle has disappeared, but the past is still close by in the landscape. You will find modern works of art in the places where the old buildings once stood.
