Description
One hundred and forty years ago, IJmuiden consisted of a handful of lockkeeper's houses on the North Sea Canal. This walking route takes you through this old part of the city. Along the route you will find 25 signs on which the history of the fishing district is recorded in stories and photos. Enjoy the liveliness around Willemsplein, the former bustling heart of the city, and the conviviality around the many shops and bars in this district.
The past of IJmuiden
The starting point of the route is at the harbor, where you can park your car. From here you walk towards the IJmuider Sea and Harbor Museum. Along the way you will learn more about the past and the lost grandeur of IJmuiden. In the second half of the 19th century, Amsterdam was connected to the North Sea with a 21 kilometer long canal. King Willem III opened the impressive lock complex in 1876 and gave it the name IJmuiden, Mouth of the IJ.
Flourishing fishmonger
The protected arms of the piers provided shelter for the many fishing vessels in IJmuiden. Traders came from Egmond, Amsterdam and Germany to the fish trade. The Vissershaven was soon built and IJmuiden grew as a fishing town. Churches, a fish auction and hotels were built for visitors to the beach and the locks and IJmuiden grew considerably.
