The highlights of the Winterswijk border

The Winterswijk National Landscape offers a varied backdrop for a cycling tour, in which grassland changes into hedgerows and beautiful ash trees. You can enjoy peace and space in the 22,000 hectares of scenic landscape in the countryside. You will also find impressive Scholten estates, meandering streams, attractive vineyards and cozy tea gardens on this route.

The starting point of the route is in the attractive center of Winterswijk. From here you cycle towards the German border. You will pass watermills and cycle through the Bekendelle nature reserve before cycling into Germany via a green border crossing. The German hinterland on this route is also definitely worth a visit with the natural beauty of Burlo and the Vardingholterveen.

From the viewpoints you can have a beautiful view over the German Vardingholter peat. The route leads you further to Burlo where a beautiful monastery is located. Via narrow forest paths you cycle across the border back into the Netherlands towards the end point. Be sure to take a look at the Stone Quarry along the way. At the end of the cycle tour you will arrive back in Winterswijk, where you can sit on one of the cozy terraces in the center. A nice snack or drink is probably in order after a day on the pedals.
