Description

A day of cycling through the Achterhoek equals a lot of nature, many sights and a lot of hospitality. You can already see the first beautiful church at the beginning of the route: the baroque Saint Francis Church from 1720.

Picturesque Fortified Towns
The route leads you through picturesque old fortified towns such as Bredevoort and Groenlo. In Meddo there is a boulder weighing 38,000 kilograms at the canteen of the local football club. The specimen at the old town hall of Winterswijk, which was also found in Meddo, weighs 43,000 kilos: it is the largest boulder in the Netherlands. Just outside Winterswijk you will soon pass the Oliemölle, a former double watermill from the fourteenth century on the course of the Boven-Slinge. A lovely place to take a good look.

National Landscape Winterswijk
In Bredevoort you can take a break with a coffee and cake or lunch at the cozy Hotel Restaurant Betam. Then you cycle further through National Landscape Winterswijk, a semi-open bocage landscape of meandering streams, hedgerows and authentic Saxon farms. It will take you little effort to switch back here and recharge the battery. You can also do this at Hotel Restaurant Kloppendiek, where you can enjoy typical Westphalian hospitality and a good night's sleep.

Zwillbrock
Zwillbrock is an ideal base for walking and cycling enthusiasts. The roughened marsh of the Zwillbrocker Venn is one of the oldest nature reserves in Germany. Remarkable: this is the northernmost breeding area for flamingos in Europe, you can spot them between March and June. Opposite Hotel Restaurant Kloppendiek is the St. Francis Church from 1720. It is the best preserved Baroque church in Münsterland. The church had a number of predecessors, such as a chapel built of sods. Zwillbrock was one of the German missions just across the border at a time when Dutch Catholics were not allowed to hold masses in their own country. Kloppendiek was the name of the road where unmarried Roman Catholic women (called taps) from Groenlo used to walk to Zwillbrock's church. Would you like to enjoy the landscape in the Achterhoek even longer? Cycle the routes 334642, 162605 and 162606. Or walk the route 335718 and 334643.
