Border walk in the green

The German-Dutch border area in the Achterhoek is perfect for a quiet walk in the green. You walk through De Leemputten and the Zwillbrocker Venn, two beautiful nature reserves where you can enjoy the fresh air and the silence.

Spotting eagles
De Leemputten Nature Park was created at the end of the nineteenth century. Then loam was excavated here for the brick factory in Groenlo. Until 1931 this was simply done with a shovel. In 1978 the area was classified as a nature reserve. It is nice to walk along here along the birches and bushes, although it can be swampy. Because of the large fish found in the water, ospreys and even a white-tailed eagle sometimes forage here!

Zwillbrocker Venn
Where the neatly divided Dutch landscape ends, the Zwillbrocker Venn begins, one of the oldest nature reserves in Germany. This roughened swamp area is a remnant of a large raised bog area that once extended far into the Achterhoek. Things can sometimes get a bit livelier here when the 16,000 black-headed gulls move around, the largest colony in Germany. The route ends at Hotel Restaurant Kloppendiek where you can enjoy Westphalian hospitality and a good night's sleep. Do you want to enjoy the landscape in the Achterhoek even longer?
