If you like sweeping views, high skies and old villages, Groningen is the place for you. This route takes you through the east of this province, all the way to Delfzijl.
The Damsterdiep
A lot of digging has also been done in the province of Groningen to build or relocate ditches and waterways. You will drive several times along the Damsterdiep, a canal of which the part between Ten Post and Delfzijl is ten centuries old. This rich history can be seen in the beautiful hanging kitchens that hang above the Damsterdiep in Appingedam. In the village of Winneweer there is a seventeenth-century inn on the Damsterdiep.
Historic mound villages
There is plenty of cultural history to discover in and around the Groningen mound villages. You will see imposing farms and humble farm workers' homes. In Spijk, one of the oldest settlements in the Groningen marine clay area, and Godlinze there are beautiful centuries-old churches. In Zeerijp you will pass De Leeuw, a corn and peeling mill from 1865. The thirteenth-century Nicolaï Church in Appingedam is one of the top 100 Dutch national monuments.
