Description
This route shows you how diverse a country can be in a short distance. From the expansive Groningen polder, you cycle to the Drentsche Aa national landscape of streams and esdorpen. You cycle a considerable distance around Zuidlaardermeer lake. It's a beautiful spot to stop for a break and gaze out over the water or to spot birds. Via Zuidlaren, a village with seven village greens, you enter the Drentsche Aa National Landscape, the best-preserved stream and esdorpen landscape in Western Europe. You cycle through the Drenthe of the past, with Saxon farms around the village greens, fields on the rounded esdorpen, and meadows in the lower stream valley.
