Enjoy the peace and quiet in the sparsely populated Achterhoek. And if you wish, take something to drink and fruit with you for the journey, because you will not pass through villages or towns. Here you cycle through a semi-open landscape of forests, meandering streams and hedgerows. You regularly pass an authentic Saxon farm. The route takes you over quiet roads to Germany. Just before junction 40 you literally drive on the border. You pass the Burlo-Vardingholter Venn, a vulnerable raised bog area that turns into the Wooldse Veen in the Netherlands. It will not surprise you that there used to be a lot of smuggling here. Back in the Netherlands you see De Dikke Steen. This boulder comes from Scandinavia and weighs about 12 tons. At Restaurant De Gulle Smid it is time for a terrace.

De Steen

Grote Steen
7108 AS Winterswijk

For a long time, the Achterhoek was an inhospitable area. From the nineteenth century, the area became increasingly accessible due to, among other things, the construction of railways and the general improvement of the infrastructure. De Steen was erected as a monument in 1915 to commemorate the pavement of the connecting roads that ran from the Woold to Miste and the German border.
