Uithoorn, North Holland, The Netherlands
Hiking route: 3299937
Provided by: Groots Genieten
This fort is part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam, the 135 kilometer long defense line on the Amstel around the capital. This fort was built in 1911. It had a special defensive position. Instead of closing off waterways, it was built to protect the (former) railways that ran here. A little further on you walk just below Uithoorn along the Zijdelmeer, which is home to a swamp forest with a wilderness of alders, willows and some meadows. You walk back along the banks of the beautifully meandering Amstel, which runs all the way to Amsterdam. You are looking out at the point where the Kromme Mijdrecht ends in the Amstel, a beautiful spot.
Tour tip; Hiking with kids! Routes up to 5 km are ideal
