Walking through the polders near Alphen aan den Rijn

From Alphen aan den Rijn you can take a walk through the polders. First you walk along the banks of the Old Rhine. Here are some beautiful buildings, such as the striking white Villa Nuova from 1868. Then you walk through the wide polders with their rows of pollard willows, old farms and vast grassy meadows. How quiet it is here! You pass the Lagenwaardse Molen, a polder mill that originally dates from 1634. You also walk along the Wijde Aa, an ancient peat stream. You walk along the Woudwetering to Woubrugge. Here you can see the village church that was inaugurated in 1653. You walk back to Alphen aan den Rijn along the medieval Heimanswetering. At Van der Valk Avifauna you end the walk with a delicious meal!
