The West Frisian landscape is beautiful to cycle through. The extensive polders are interspersed with picturesque towns such as Enkhuizen and Medemblik with numerous historical sights. History buffs will love this route, but it is also the right place if you are looking for natural beauty. The best of both worlds.

Historic Enkhuizen

The starting point of the cycle tour is in Enkhuizen, the very tip of West Friesland. Take a look at the old harbor, where you can watch the pleasantly bobbing boats, or visit the Zuiderzee Museum or the Bottle Scheepjes Museum. In the Zuiderzee Museum you will be taken back to the time when the IJsselmeer was not yet closed off from the sea. You can see how people lived in this region at the time and what crafts they practiced.

Get a breath of fresh air along the IJsselmeer

From Enkhuizen you cycle along the IJsselmeer to Medemblik. Here you can get a breath of fresh air and enjoy the sun that shines on the water on beautiful days. In Medemblik you can visit the Dutch Steam Engine Museum. Here you will learn all about steam engines and you can view the steam boilers that were previously used in pumping stations to pump water from polders.

Lighthouse de Ven

You would almost forget that the IJsselmeer was not yet closed off from the sea, but you can still see some clues here and there in the landscape. For example, there is a lighthouse in the village of Oosterdijk. This lighthouse is square and made of white stones. The tower was built at the end of the 17th century, making it one of the oldest lighthouses in the Netherlands. The tower was once constructed as one of the three towers that indicated the route from the Wadden Sea to Amsterdam for ships. The two other towers have been replaced by iron ones, but De Ven lighthouse is still the same as before.

The Dutch Steam Engine Museum is located in the former pumping station 'Vier Noorder Koggen'. This pumping station dates from 1869. An important part of the museum is this installation, because the pumping station gives a good picture of how things were done over 100 years ago that we now do with electricity. Many people don't realize that steam has a lot of power. It is not without reason that the steam engine was the start of the great Industrial Revolution. In this museum you can see how much power steam has, but you also learn more about the how and why of the steam engine. You will find all kinds of different working steam engines in the museum. Curious how exactly such a steam engine works? Then join the Stoomlab. With miniature steam engines you learn to better understand how steam works. You can even run a miniature steam engine yourself. Opening times: from spring break to the end of October from 10 am to 5 pm. Closed on Mondays. Open on Mondays during the holidays.

In the Zuiderzee Museum you can experience the history of the Zuiderzee and the surrounding villages yourself in both the indoor museum and the outdoor museum. In this museum you take an impressive journey through time. For example, go back to the 1930s, when the Zuiderzee became the IJsselmeer. In a ferry you go across the IJsselmeer to the outdoor museum. You will almost be short of eyes there. Smell the sea water, walk along cobblestone streets and admire authentic houses, various shops, workshops and churches in villages along the former Zuiderzee. Help craftsmen in the Markerwaard knitting nets or twist a rope in the rope-making workshop. Do you also want to take a look at the treasury of the Zuiderzee? Then go to the indoor museum, which shows you a rich collection with its varied exhibitions. In addition to masterpieces, this collection also includes personal stories about traditional life. With a combination of history, photography, traditional costume and design you get a beautiful overall picture of life along the Zuiderzee.
