Description
In the south of Belgium you drive through the region with the fairytale name of the Valleys of Living Water. That name is not entirely exaggerated, because you see many lakes and babbling rivers. You also drive here through vast silent forests.
The ancient Mariembourg
The former fortified town of Mariembourg (meaning Castle of Mary) was built in 1542 by order of Mary of Hungary. The old center still has the planning shape of a star, with streets leading to a central square. The fortress had the reputation of being impregnable, but it was already taken in 1554. Just below the town you will pass the nice brewery museum of Brasserie des Fagnes.
Cozy Couvin
The route starts and ends in Couvin, a town on the banks of the river L\\\'Eau Noire. In the old city center, which was once surrounded by ramparts, you can still see the beautiful merchant halls and houses from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. At restaurant La Ruche you can stretch your legs on the terrace and of course enjoy a delicious regional dish.
Historic steam train
Fan of old steam trains? In Mariembourg you can take a trip back in time. The historic trains of the Chemin de Fer à Vapeur des Trois Vallées, or the Steam Trains of the Three Valleys, depart from the old railway station. You can take a trip through beautiful river valleys on an old route. The locomotive shed in Mariembourg is the only one in Belgium that still has the old roundabout shape.
