Cycling through the hotspots Volendam and Marken

This beautiful cycling route of over 51 kilometers takes you through Waterland past Volendam and Marken. A typical Dutch route with Zaanse houses, windmills and bridges.

With the ferry service
The starting point of this route is the jetty of the Volendam Marken Express at the harbor in Volendam. From here you take the ferry service to Marken. Take a seat on the sun terrace or within the shelter of the boat and enjoy the special view over the former Zuiderzee. As soon as you arrive in Marken, you automatically imagine yourself in times long gone. Marken is a former island, now a peninsula, with wooden houses on stilts and mounds and narrow alleys next to which clothes hang to dry in the garden. You cycle past Het Paard van Marken, the lighthouse on the eastern point. You leave the island via the dike that is connected to the mainland.

Historic Waterland
The cycle route continues through the municipality of Waterland, a beautiful area for cycling. Surrounded by meadows you can enjoy the peace and quiet around you. Broek in Waterland was one of the most prosperous villages in Waterland during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries because of the wealthy merchants and captains who came to live there.

By Volendam
Shortly afterwards you cycle past the Zuidpolder mill. This Zuidpolder mill was built in 1670 and was powered by the water of the Schermerboezem. The mill was decommissioned in the second half of the twentieth century, but the mill is still operational. The route ends in Volendam, a real fishing town with of course the characteristic dialect. The area around the harbor is very attractive with fish shops and tourist shops.
