Description
You can safely call West Friesland a region with its own character. In this part of North Holland you can still hear a Frisian dialect. This route introduces you to the cultural history of West Friesland.
Historic dike
Today you will discover part of the 126 kilometer long West Frisian Omringdijk, the only monumental dike in the world. On one side you have beautiful views over the IJsselmeer, on the other side you look out over old villages and meadows. You also cycle through the young nature reserve Het Streekbos near Enkhuizen.
Most beautiful lighthouse
On your route is one of the oldest and most beautiful lighthouses in the Netherlands: De Ven. This white square brick building dates from 1700 and has a beam height of 17 meters. The lighthouse was built together with two other lighthouses to guide ships safely through the former Zuiderzee, but only this one is still standing proudly. The lighthouse burned on oil until a fire in 1819, after which the new light house was given the so-called Fresnel lens, special convex lenses.
