\\\'God created the world, but the Dutch made Holland.\\\' A statement that of course does not fall from the high Dutch sky. Come and enjoy the wide views and old villages east of Alkmaar.
Island polder
The Eilandpolder is a marshy peat area, where farmers go to the cows with their barges. With this brisk walk you mainly walk over the ancient dikes along the polder. You have beautiful views of grasslands and reed-lined ditches. In the eastern part you walk through a swampy area that is partly sheltered. You will also pass the Menningweermolen, a thatched polder mill from 1888, and you can take a look at the historic town of De Rijp.
William Woestenburg
A few months before the liberation of the Netherlands, an English plane was shot down above the Eilandspolder. The resistance fighters Lou Beumer and Willem Woestenburg tried to bring the surviving airmen to safety. However, they were shot down by the Germans. This monument is placed on the location where they lost their lives. Please note: From 15 March to 1 July, the Kerkepad between Oostdijk and Noordeinde will be closed.
