National Landscape Drentsche Aa
The starting point of this route is in the village of Rolde. Here you can take a look at the flour mill Rolde on a mill mountain. This mill was built here in 1873 and today the mill runs every Saturday. The mill is therefore open to the public, so grab your chance if you follow this route on a Saturday. You then walk through the nature of the Drentsche Aa National Landscape to the edge of Assen. This city originated on the spot where a nunnery used to be on a sand ridge. The street names in Assen today still remind us of this. Assen is one of the youngest cities in the Netherlands with city rights.
From Assen to Rolde
From Assen you walk back to Rolde. Over the years, this landscape keeps changing. This is because the Drentsche Aa stream is allowed to flow freely without human interference and hardly any land consolidation has taken place. In this way, ancient wooded banks and ash trees were preserved, but at the same time the catchment area of the stream changed slightly.
The village of Rolde
The village of Rolde was originally an esdorp with several village greens. A brink is an open space in an esdorp. This open space usually consists of a small square with grass and trees in the middle of a village. Until 1813, Rolde was the most important village in the Drenthe landscape. At that time it was a resting place for travelers between Groningen and Coevorden.
