Tour of Sion Abbey from Wesepe

Your route starts at Het Wapen Van Wesepe. The village of Wesepe has less than two thousand inhabitants. This small scale characterizes the region. Meadows and fields surround beautiful estates and forests. From Wesepe you can take a nice walk through rural Salland. Special is Sion Abbey, a Cistercian abbey of the Trappist order in Diepenveen. It is a daughter of the Achelse Kluis in Belgium. The monastery, which was founded in 1883, is the only Trappist monastery in the Netherlands that is located above the major rivers. In 1935 the monastery was renamed an abbey. The brotherhood now consists of fifteen monks. Fourteen of them live in the peaceful harmony of the small-scale community. The fifteenth brother has chosen a life as a hermit and lives in the heart of the castle.
