Description
Your route starts at BY't VEER. After a cup of coffee you put on your hiking boots. A little further on you walk into the village of Brakel. From the Waaldijk you have a beautiful view over the water. Shipping on the Waal is always fascinating to watch. In 1672, Brakel Castle was blown up by French troops. A century later, Wilhelmus Wilhelmius built a new Huis Brakel a little further on. The ruins of the old castle were incorporated into a newly landscaped garden around 1820. That is unique for Gelderland. You now see a beautiful estate, complete with a park forest, castle ruins, canal and vegetable garden. You will also discover old orchards. In the new part of the park you can enjoy flower meadows, a deciduous forest and pond.
