Heemtuin Muntendam & Nature Park between the Fens
It is not for nothing that the Heemtuin and the neighboring Nature Park are seen by many as'the pearl of Muntendam\\\'. The original Heemtuin dates from 1982 and was a sheep pasture surrounded by trees. Eventually it was transformed into a varied natural forest, where you will find a heath and a pond. And in recent years this has been expanded with an orchard with old varieties of fruit trees and an apiary. Nature takes its course in this 3.5 hectare former agricultural area.
In the 1990s, work began on the construction of a visitor center and cultural garden around the building. There are also vegetable gardens, educational gardens, discovery gardens and a new area has been created since 2005: Between the Fens. Originated from a former agricultural area and developed into prehistoric times; part is grazed with goats and sheep.
In short, the Heemtuin and Nature Park Between the Venen near Muntendam are educational and exciting with bridges, historic trees, lookout hills and a ruin. There is also a catering facility. (Nieuweweg 127, 9646 AD Muntendam)
The Wiede
A polder in the Veenkoloniën? It may sound a bit strange to you, but there is one in the built-up area of Veendam, between the Wester and Oosterdiep. The meandering river Oude Ae also runs through this piece of old stream landscape, between Veendam and Muntendam.
De Wiede is also a former water board in the province of Groningen. There was a steam pumping station on the corner of Bredeweg and Oude Verlaat. In 1963 the name of the water board was changed to De Wiede.
Once you have arrived in Muntendam, it is highly recommended to take a walk through the center and visit the historic buildings that Muntendam has to offer.

Old AE Park
Would you like to combine history with a cozy resting place during your bike ride or have a picnic during a walking tour? Then stop at the Old Ae Park. The medieval peat river Oude Ae has its origin in the former Zwanemeer west of Wildervank. You can still see the old Ae in the ponds that run through Veendam from south to north. The Oude Ae can also be seen around the deer park near the Veenkoloniaal Museum. In the center, the Oude Ae goes underground with divers. The Oude Ae Park borders the De Wiede polder in Veendam. Juliana Park Veendam
When you take a short city walk through the center of Veendam, the Julianapark is a suitable place for a moment of rest. The Juliana Park dates from 1913 and was laid out by garden architect Jan Vroom Sr. for an amount of NLG 1945,-. The park was changed 15 years later by landscape architect JW Verdenius. The park only got its official name in 1945, at the wedding of Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard. Before then it was just the municipal plantation. Here you will also find captains' graves in the historic cemetery. There are various opportunities in the park to sit and enjoy Parkstad Veendam. (Raadhuisplein 5, 9641 AW Veendam)
Langebosch lake in Wildervank
You might not expect it so quickly in a residential area, but in Wildervank you will find a beautiful lake, with a nice beach where you can sunbathe. With a view of pleasure craft, children playing with sand and beautiful houses, this is an excellent place to'Simply Enjoy\\\'.
In May 2008, the new sailing connection from Bareveld to the Zuidlaardermeer was officially opened, resulting in an attractive sailing route. This route is part of the tour network in East Groningen and you can sail by boat from the Zuidlaardermeer directly to the Langeboschmeer in Wildervank. (Woortmanslaan 9642 JK Veendam)
Recreation park Borgerswold
Adjacent to Veendam is the Borgerswold recreation area of 450 hectares, which was created in 1971 as a sand excavation in the peat landscape west of Veendam-Wildervank. It connects to the Sorghvliet residential area. White painted drawbridges create a special atmosphere. There are facilities for young and old, including a water ski cable car, riding stables, an 18-hole golf course, a petting zoo and swimming beaches. ATB routes, bridle paths and an extensive network of cycling and walking routes run through the park. Very suitable for an active day out or relaxing in a beautiful spot.
The petting zoo is open from Monday to Friday from 8.30 am to 4.45 pm. Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. (Woldlaan 10, 9642 LX Veendam)
Boerenbos de Lange
For many people, this forest between Muntendam and Veendam is still unknown. Yet it is a gem, where you run the risk of suddenly coming face to face with deer, for example. Although the forest is still quite young, the trees that were planted in 1996 have grown quite large and you can enjoy a wonderful hour's walk. Or you can include this forest in your bike ride, because there is also a cycle path between Muntendam and Veendam. To fully enjoy the view of ditches and winding paths, we advise you to park your bike and get off. You can do this at the Westerbrink, where'Boerenbos de Lange\\\' is carved into a bench or at the walking path to the forest at Middenweg 88, where you will see a sign. (Middenweg 88, 9645 BH Veendam)
