Tour of Loonse Drunense Duinen and Nieuwkuijkse Wiel

Cycling along the Heidijk you drive through the Nieuwkuijkse Bosje, a former coppice forest. You will encounter a lot of water along the way. Various wheels bear witness to previous dike breaches. The Nieuwkuijkse Wiel was created in 1880 after the flooding of the Bergsche Maas. It used to flow here during times of high water. There are many birds to spot on and around the lake! The Loonse and Drunense Duinen have been declared a National Park because of the extensive sand drifts. The living drifting sands are not found on such a large scale anywhere in Europe. You will also see beautiful forests there. Coniferous trees predominate on the dry soils along the northern edge, while along the moist southern edge you see a lot of foliage. You will also come across many terraces!
