Tour of Zevenhoven and Leiden

Your route starts at TOP Rijnsaterwoude. Zevenhoven used to consist of difficult to penetrate and boggy peat. Dewatering started in 1085. Zevenhoven is named after the number of farms that were originally located here: around 1100, taxes had to be paid here for seven hooves. The 16th century Cologne Beardman jars that were excavated here are very special. The Nieuwkoopse Plassen are one of the few remaining large peat bog areas that the Netherlands once had. You will pass marshes, but also hay fields, flowery meadows and reed fields. You follow the Oude Rijn from Alphen aan de Rijn to Leiden. Nice to experience the atmosphere! Rijpwetering and Oude Ade are two picturesque villages. Be sure to apply your brakes here as well. Stop off at Landwinkel Castelijn along the way!
