Tour of Zevenhoven and Leiden

Your route starts at TOP Rijnsaterwoude. Zevenhoven used to consist of difficult to penetrate and marshy peat. Drainage began in 1085. Zevenhoven is named after the number of farms that were originally located here: around 1100, taxes had to be paid for seven farms. The 16th century Cologne bearded man jugs that were excavated here are very special. The Nieuwkoopse Plassen are one of the few remaining large lowland peat areas that the Netherlands once had. You will pass marshes, but also hayfields, flowery meadows and reed fields. You follow the Oude Rijn from Alphen aan de Rijn to Leiden. Nice to get a taste of the atmosphere! Rijpwetering and Oude Ade are two picturesque villages. Be sure to squeeze your brakes here too.
