Description

You can easily discover ancient Bilzen with a short city walk. You will be surprised how much cultural history this pleasant Belgian-Limburg town houses. You can see, for example, a seventeenth-century town hall and old beguinage. Thanks to the beautiful city parks, you will also get your money's worth as a nature lover.

English landscape
You don't see it often, but Bilzen has a city center that lies in the valley of a river: the Demer. This river meanders as usual through the two parks that are on your route. With its mix of undulating lawns, ponds and bushes, you will experience the romance of the English style in Park Haffmans. The former notary's house in neo-rococo architecture is a real eye-catcher here. This also applies to the Bilzermolen, a water mill whose history dates back to the thirteenth century. You can also experience the surprisingly quiet urban nature of the Demer valley in Park Tabaert.

Taste the city
You will experience that Burgundian enjoyment is not a myth on the many cozy terraces in Bilzen. Try a beer from the local craft brewery Den Toetëlèr. Or order a regional dish, such as rabbit or farm chicken, Bilzerse style. I hope it tastes well! And be sure to cycle route 316468 if you want to explore more of Bilzen and the surrounding area,

Back in time
Bilzen was once a small Roman settlement on a highway. Nothing is left of that period, but you will still find a rich cultural history in Bilzen. Such as the Begijnhof, whose origins date back to the thirteenth century. In the Demer near the Begijnhof, the statue of a washerwoman still rinses the laundry in the water. The town hall on the Markt dates from 1685. The limestone facade is a fine example of the Maasland Renaissance style that was in vogue in the former Prince-Bishopric of Liège. Behind the town hall you can see the Sint-Mauritius Church, a neo-Gothic hall church that - like many churches in Limburg - is built of marlstone. Be sure to cycle route 316468 if you want to explore more of Bilzen and the surrounding area.
