Follow the trail of the hunebed builders during the'Bijvoetpad\\\' walking route of 13.5 kilometers around Borger. Mugwort is a plant that grows up to 1.5 meters high. The leaves contain an oil that has a relaxing effect on your feet.
Already in Roman times, the oil was used by the soldiers to avoid blisters, among other things. You walk across the Hondsrug and of course you come across many dolmens, but also forests, fields, meadows, sand and heath and a canal with bridges and weirs.
The largest hunebed in the Netherlands is located at the Hunebedcentrum. At the end of the route you can see this hunebed. How special is it that about 5000 years ago people were able to build a grave in this way with such large boulders.
On the way to the village of Drouwen you first come across triplets of hunebedden. You continue along the sandy path, where two more dolmens lie close to each other in the shade of the trees.
The walking route also runs through Bronneger. According to an old legend, a city was once located here that was built by giants, and later inhabited by humans. After Bronneger you walk with a view of the stream valley of the Hunze back to Borger, the'Hunebed capital\\\' of the Netherlands.
