Description

Just below the Utrechtse Heuvelrug lies the Kromme Rijnstreek. An area of dikes, vast grasslands, waterways and orchards. And of a rich cultural history. Soon after boarding you will pass the first of many old sights: Sterkenburg Castle. Just before junction 98 you will pass a replica of a Roman watchtower. A complete Roman fort once stood here along the Limes, the northern border of the Roman Empire. After crossing the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, you will cycle a short distance along the Lek Canal. It is beautiful cycling here along the rippling water and the many beautiful buildings. On the other side you will cycle past Fort Jutphaas, a defensive structure built around 1820 that was part of the New Dutch Waterline. Via Houten you cycle back to IJsboerderij Vrederust.
