Description

Just below the Utrechtse Heuvelrug lies the Kromme Rijnstreek. An area of dikes, wide grasslands, watercourses and orchards. And a rich cultural history. Soon after boarding you will also pass the first of many old sights: Kasteel Sterkenburg. Just before junction 98 you will pass a replica of a Roman watchtower. A complete Roman fort once stood here along the Limes, the northern border of the Roman Empire. After you have crossed the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, you will cycle along the Lek Canal for a while. It is nice to cycle here along the rippling water and the many beautiful buildings. On the other side you pass Fort Jutphaas, a defensive structure built around 1820 that was part of the New Dutch Waterline. Via Houten you cycle back to IJsboerderij Vrederust.
