Around the IJ, nowadays the Blue Square of Amsterdam, we walk past places where people live and work on the water: the Houthavens, Schoonschip, the Ceuvel and much more.
For a long time, Noord and the rest of Amsterdam stood with their backs to each other, with the water of the IJ as a natural barrier. But times changed. The Central Station opened to the IJ and mysterious areas on the north bank with signs'prohibited entry for unauthorized persons\\\', such as the Shell site and the NDSM shipyard, were opened to the public. Some enthusiasts call the IJ'The Blue Square of Amsterdam\\\', not water that separates, but connects. All around it is good to live and work on an ark or ship. We walk through Schoonschip, a sustainable floating residential area, the Houthavens where no more tree trunks float and a harbor with houseboats on dry land: the Ceuvel.
The 9 km trip starts at the ferry jetty on the NDSM site and ends at the Pontsteiger in the Houthavens.
The texts are recorded by Herman Geertsema and Hans Farjon. The sound recordings are by Paul Janszen.
