Description

With this route you get a taste of the history of northeastern Netherlands. This has traditionally been the area of the Saxons, who formed the Netherlands together with the Frisians and Franks. Saxons believed in the gods of nature, such as Wodan and Donar. They gathered around a Sacred Tree. In Groningen you cycle through the clay region along a ribbon of mound villages and mounds. In Drenthe you will see the flow valley of the Drenthe AA and drive over the slopes of the Hondsrug. Prehistoric burial mounds, dolmens and remains of medieval cart tracks adorn the rugged landscape here. Further on you cycle through the Vecht valley and through the beautifully rolling Twente scenic landscape towards Enschede. A nice introduction to everything these authentic regions have to offer.
