Description

With this route you will experience the history of the north-east of the Netherlands. This is traditionally the area of the Saxons, who together with the Frisians and Franks formed the Netherlands. The Saxons believed in the gods of nature, such as Wodan and Donar. They came together around a Holy Tree. In Groningen you cycle through the clay region along a ribbon of terps and mounds. In Drenthe you will see the river valley of the Drentse AA and cycle over the slopes of the Hondsrug. Prehistoric burial mounds, dolmens and remains of medieval cart tracks adorn the rugged landscape here. Further on you cycle through the valley of the Vecht and through the beautifully rolling Twente coulisselandschap further towards Enschede. A wonderful introduction to everything these authentic regions have to offer.
