3124618 Tour of Westkapelle: Noordervroon and Kreek

Your route starts at Het Polderhuis, museums & more. From the dike you have a beautiful view over the sea and Westkapelle with its characteristic red roofs. Various species of birds, such as terns, avocets and black-headed gulls, breed in the Noordervroon nature reserve in the spring. Spoonbills can also be seen regularly in the summer. Het Polderhuis regularly organizes bird excursions to the Noordervroon. Deer are also often spotted. The High lighthouse of Westkapelle was originally the church tower of the Sint Willibrorduskerk. The church burned down in 1831, but the tower was spared and has served as a lighthouse for 200 years. The tower can be climbed, you buy tickets at your starting point. The last part of this walk goes along the creek, a remnant of the bombing in 1944.

The Polderhuis, museums & more is a super nice place to sit on a terrace and soak up cultural history. In the museum cafe and on the cozy terrace you can enjoy a coffee with something delicious at your leisure. On the terrace you have a view of the seawall and the Liberty Bridge that runs to the Sherman tank on the dike. In the museum, the history of Walcheren and Westkapelle comes to life in a beautiful way. The two lighthouses in Westkapelle are also part of the museum, you can visit them at regular intervals.

The cast iron lighthouse het Lage licht or Noorderhoofd, together with the other tower of Westkapelle, the former church tower het Hoge licht, forms a light line to the Oostgat.

Hoge vuurtoren van Westkapelle

4361 CS Veere

The Hoge licht or Zuiderhoofd was once the church tower of the Gothic Sint Willibrorduskerk, destroyed by fire in the eighteenth century. In the nineteenth century a beacon was placed on the tower.
