Description

With this route you can taste the history of the northeastern Netherlands. This has traditionally been the area of the Saxons, who formed the Netherlands together with the Frisians and Franks. Saxons believed in the gods of nature, such as Wodan and Donar. They gathered around a Sacred Tree. In Groningen you cycle through the clay region along a ribbon of wierde villages and mounds. In Drenthe you get to see the stream valley of the Drentse AA and you drive over the slopes of the Hondsrug. Prehistoric burial mounds, dolmens and remnants of medieval cart tracks adorn the robust landscape here. Further on you cycle through the valley of the Vecht and through the beautifully rolling Twentse bocage landscape further towards Enschede. A nice introduction to everything these authentic regions have to offer.
