Your route starts at De Hoofdwacht, a historic spot in the historic center of Brielle (also called Den Briel). The largely seventeenth-century fortress of Brielle is one of the best preserved defense works in the Netherlands. Brielle was taken from the Spanish by the Beggars on April 1, 1572. After which the statement'On April 1, Alva lost his glasses\\\' became a cultural asset. Historical Museum Den Briel is highly recommended to start your visit. Here you will learn more about the history of the fortified city. History seems to have stood still in the atmospheric streets. From the water you have a beautiful view of the fortress belt of the famous town of Brielle. You will also pass the Vliegend Hert, a flour mill from 1862.

In 1572 Brielle was taken by the Beggars. In the 17th century, the city walls with the mill were demolished. The so-called Molenbolwerk was placed on the east side, which was later replaced by a tower mill. The mill burned down in 1810 and it was not until 1973 that a major restoration took place.
