Ribe is the oldest city in Denmark and in many places you will find traces from the Viking age. The tower of Ribe Cathedral is clearly visible in the flat landscape. Ribe Dom dates from 1250 and is the first cathedral in Denmark. During a tour of the historic city center and the museums Ribes Vikinger, Ribe Art Museum and HEX you will gain insight into the history of the city.
From Ribe the tour continues northwest into the flat swamp area, which is intersected by drainage canals and dams. The landscape has been exposed to flooding many times. Storm surge columns in Ribe and at Mando Ebbevej show the magnitude of the storm surges. The landscape is now protected by a dike that runs along the entire coast and the tour goes along the dike from the Kammerlusen, which regulates the water level in Ribe. You continue towards Mando Ebbevej. Nearby is the Wadden Sea Center, which tells the fantastic story of the Wadden Sea National Park with its nature and impressive birds.
On the way back to Ribe you will pass the Ribe VikingeCenter, where you can follow in the footsteps of the Vikings for a day.
