Tour of Woudrichem and Loevestein Castle

Your route starts at De Speeltol. From here you can take a nice trip to the beautiful old center of Woudrichem and Slot Loevestein. The historic center of Woudrichem has been beautifully restored. The city has slowly developed from a market square on the rampart since the ninth century. In 1814 the city was included in the New Dutch Waterline, which ran from the Zuiderzee to the Biesbosch. In the event of a threat of war, the water line could be flooded to protect the western Netherlands. With the advent of airplanes in World War II, this defense tactic had become outdated. The highlight of this tour is Loevestein Castle. Sturdy towers have been built against the main castle, made of red brick. This castle was also part of the New Dutch Waterline.
