Walking through Dwarsgracht and Giethoorn

Your route starts at Café Restaurant De Otterskooi in the nice Dwarsgracht. Giethoorn is very famous, but this is also a very picturesque water village. And much less busy than Giethoorn! Compare and discover the charm of the two villages through a walk. You will soon see where Giethoorn owes its nickname as 'Venice of the North'. To transport the extracted peat, canals and ditches were dug here. This created small islands on which houses were built that can only be reached via bridges. Along the canal you pass many characteristic monumental farms, houses and arched bridges. You can get a breath of fresh air along the edge of De Beulakerwijde while you walk back to Dwarsgracht. There is only one road through the village!
