Hidden village route

You will be spoiled in Vierhouten. This walking route takes you through the nature around this picturesque village in the middle of the Veluwe. You walk through a varied and extensive nature reserve of unprecedented beauty. Dense forests, old heaths and whimsical streams form the backdrop for a long day of enjoyment.

Carefree enjoyment

Oak, beech and coniferous trees grow in the woods. While walking, you have the chance, especially around the edges of the day, to spot wild animals such as red deer, roe deer or even a fox. Wild boars and badgers also live in this area. Squirrels and many bird species hide in the trees, of which the woodpecker, for example, likes to be heard. The Veluwe was once covered by an immense moorland. Now there are only a few relatively small heaths left. As you walk on the paths between the heather bushes, you experience that the silence of the past still lives here.

Back in time

You also become quiet when you are standing at L59, one of the listening posts from the Liberation Route. Here you will hear the dramatic story about the Hidden Village: a secret village in hiding that was founded in the spring of 1943 in the woods. About eighty refugees were hidden in this village for more than a year. In the end it went wrong... Three huts have been rebuilt, some remains of the original huts can still be found.
