A detour on the Woldberg

You don't necessarily have to go to Limburg for sunken roads. Surprisingly enough, you will also find them on the Woldberg, a lateral moraine in the otherwise flat landscape around Steenwijk. This short walk takes you over this special hill of 26 meters high.

The Woldberg is largely wooded, including stately beech trees. The route therefore leads you through hollow forest paths and dead straight avenues that were built by former landlords on their estate. Some of the walking paths you walk on are paved with the rubble that remained after the bombing of Rotterdam during World War II. This rubble contained a lot of lime, so that you see many lime-loving plants along the path.

According to a legend, a boat sank at the foot of the Woldberg during a flood of the Zuiderzee. A esquire would have wanted to bring his gold to safety with this boat. The gold was never found. When you are at the top of the Woldberg, you still have the opportunity to climb the free viewing tower. From here you have a beautiful view of the fortified town of Steenwijk. In clear weather you can even see Heerenveen and Giethoorn.

Staying out at Buitengoed Fredeshiem

The base for this detour is Buitengoed Fredeshiem. In 1929, the Frisian Mennonite Broederschapshuis Fredeshiem was founded here. Today, Fredeshiem offers fourteen hectares of accommodation options. Whether you are with 1 person or with 80, there is room for everyone at Fredeshiem. There is also a restaurant located at the estate where you can enjoy the tastiest regional dishes on the terrace when the weather is nice or of course just a cup of coffee or something fresh.
