Your route starts at a parking lot in Oud-Heusden. You explore the remains of the medieval Heusden Castle in Oudheusden, a village that once lay on the Maas. The Schans near Doeveren was built in the sixteenth century to defend the Elshoutse Zeedijk and the Bovenlandse Sluis. Via Doeveren you walk to the Bergsche Maas. On the dike you can enjoy beautiful views of the river and the grasslands. This part of the Meuse was dug by human hands at the end of the nineteenth century to reduce the amount of water that the Merwede had to process. Heusden is a picturesque fortified town. The fortifications were subjected to a major restoration in 1978. Here you can enjoy a cup of coffee with apple pie at't Wapen van Heusden.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
