Tour of Bergen op Zoom and Brabantse Wal

This beautiful large circuit leads you to Bergen op Zoom, a city with a rich history. The first wall of the fortified town of Bergen op Zoom was completed in 1335. That round shape can still be found in the street plan. The city gate Lievevrouwepoort has also been preserved. It was an important trading place, which grew into a garrison town after 1600. You cross the Brabantse Wal: you can clearly see the difference in height. This steep edge forms the sudden transition between the high-lying Brabant sandy soils on the east side and the low-lying marine clay area of the Scheldt in the west.
