Westerbork, which is mentioned in old writings as early as 1206, is the starting point of this signposted route. Westerbork already had a chapel at that time, which was converted into a church in 1283. The current Westerbork is a pleasant tourist center where you can grab a drink or visit one of the 2 museums. Westerbork is also known for Camp Westerbork, which was used by the Germans in World War II as a transit camp. However, the Memorial Center with the former Camp are 12 km away on the outskirts of Hooghalen.
Walk outside Westerbork through an ancient landscape. The penultimate ice age had a lot of influence on the landscape here and formed the Drents Plateau. The farmers settled on these'Drentse Hooglanden\\\' and formed the characteristic Drenthe esdorpen landscape of high-altitude villages with greens and ash (fields), wooded banks and low-lying meadows and haylands in the catchment area of the stream (Westerborkerstroom) .
In the originally medieval esdorp Zwiggelte you can taste the authentic Drenthe atmosphere of yesteryear. The open character of Zwiggelte has largely remained intact. On the southeast side of the village is a remnant of a green with old oaks and beautiful Saxon farmhouses.
The route starts at Hoofdstraat 16 at't Aole Gemientehoes, the former town hall of Westerbork. You can park for free behind the center. It is also possible to pick up the route at other locations using the signage.
