Description
With its 1500 hectares, the Strabrechtse Heide is the largest heathland in the South of the Netherlands. Under the often picturesque skies you will find an ancient landscape here, with a variety of animals.
When the shepherd is on the road, you can see him walking past with his herd of Kempian heath sheep. At the Waschven you have a good view of the grazing Scottish highlanders. Like the sheep, they keep the area short. Along the fens you can see and hear the moor frog in early spring. And with a lot of luck you can even see a crane flying overhead. You may also see the gentian blue fluttering by, or hear the nightjar calling.
What you will encounter in any case are heather, heather and juniper. If you want to walk across a flowering heath, August is the best time.
This circular walk is also marked (purple route).
The start and end point is Natuurpoort De Plaetse.
Brabantse Natuurpoorten are the starting point to discover nature. At each nature gate there is a four meter high key as a landmark. And there is a panel with information about routes, nature and cultural history in the area.
De Plaetse is the name of a reconstruction of a former'dries\\\'; a triangular communal meadow and place where crops could be planted. Here are now a sheepfold, a heather garden, an insect garden and a flower garden. There is also a war memorial here.
Before or after the walk you can visit Heidecafé De Strabrechtse Heide for a snack or a drink. This café is located next to Natuurpoort De Plaetse.
