Description
Historic Zwammerdam and Bodegraven
The tour starts in the direction of Zwammerdam. Zwammerdam is located in the middle of the area where the Limes (northern border of the Roman Empire) and the Old Dutch Waterline meet. The historic center is nice to wander around a bit. The next'stop\\\' is Bodegraven, where a piece of history also awaits you: Fort Wierickerschans. This defense work (1673) is located on the south bank of the Old Rhine and was also part of the Old Dutch Waterline. The site is freely accessible from Monday to Friday between 9:00 and 16:00.
The capital of the Green Heart
Your bike tour continues towards Woerden, the so-called 'capital' of the Green Heart of Holland. It is an excellent starting point for cycling, walking or boating trips. Woerden has a harbour in the middle of the pleasant city centre and there are plenty of nice places to have lunch or dinner.
The Meije
You cycle back along the beautiful Meije, a (ribbon) village between Zwammerdam/Bodegraven, Zegveld, Woerdense Verlaat and Nieuwkoop. This remains one of my favourite areas! You will find various pleasant gardens, terraces and shops with regional products from the Groene Hart. Stop for a nice cool drink at Café De Halve Maan. What an appropriate saying they have on the wall:"A thirsty man, tired of't going, quenches his thirst at the Halve Maan\\\".
