Your route starts at Grenshotel/Restaurant De Jonckheer in Ossendrecht. The name Ossendrecht is a corruption of Ussedrecht. A usse refers to a dune along the Scheldt, a drecht is a fordable place. Here you walk on the Brabantse Wal, a moraine that was created during the last Ice Age, 15 to 10,000 years ago. The edge of the sand plateau extends from the Belgian border to Steenbergen and reaches a height of up to 20 meters. You will soon walk along a sloping path into De Stoppelbergen, which is part of the De Zoom - Kalmthoutse Heide border park. There are many maritime pines in the area, recognizable by their very long needles, coarse bark and large pine cones. The trees are always crooked!
