Waterline route Woudrichem and Loevestein Castle

Your route starts at Brasserie de Laegt in rural Almkerk. From here you can take a nice trip to the beautiful old center of Woudrichem and Slot Loevestein. Since the ninth century, Woudrichem has slowly developed from a market square on the wall. In 1814 the city was included in the New Dutch Waterline, which ran from the Zuiderzee to the Biesbosch. In the event of a threat of war, the water line could be flooded to protect the western Netherlands. With the advent of airplanes in World War II, this defense tactic had become outdated. The highlight of this tour is Loevestein Castle. Sturdy towers have been built against the main castle, made of red brick. This castle was also part of the New Dutch Waterline, just like the Old Batteries on the Meerdijk.
