Cycling through the Groningen peat area

This route takes you through the surroundings of Oude Pekela and Stadskanaal. A route through a vast and quiet landscape. On the edge of Stadskanaal you cycle through the Pagedal, a beautiful nature reserve.

Music Museum
Just outside the city you will pass Museum Musica, which is located in a former church building. You will find a special collection of musical instruments here. Further on you pass through Wildervanksterdallen, a hamlet in the middle of the valley grounds along a canal. Here you have wide views in a quiet environment.

Pekela
In Oude Pekela you can make a stopover to enjoy a drink and something tasty at Pekelahof. You leave the former peat colony along the Pekel A. You pass a few monumental buildings, the Sint-Willibrordus church from 1896 and the Lutheran Church from 1762. De Zwaluw is a corn mill from 1891. Pekela has been mined since the seventeenth century, in 1810 the town was split into Oude and Nieuwe Pekela.
