Historic fortress route near Utrecht

The area around Bunnik is located just outside Utrecht. At first glance it may seem like a busy area, but that is not so bad once you are on your bike. The polder-like old landscape just outside the big cities is wonderfully quiet with large country estates and historic forts of the New Dutch Waterline. The New Dutch Waterline is a defense line along the river Lek. The line runs from the island of Pampus, above Muiden, to the Biesbosch. Just outside Bunnik you can take a look at the Fort bij Vechten. This is the second largest fort of the waterline. The end point of the route is Postillion Hotel Utrecht Bunnik. In this luxury hotel you can spend the night comfortably, but you can also have a cup of coffee or a bite to eat.
