Description
You can imagine yourself abroad in this part of the South Limburg hills. You will not find so many ascending and descending winding roads anywhere else in the Netherlands. This walking route takes you over the famous Loorberg, which is part of the course of the Amstel Gold Race.
Auberge de Smockelaer
The walk starts and ends at Auberge de Smockelaer in Slenaken. This beautiful location consists of an eighteenth-century farmhouse, an old mayor's house and Limburg villas. You can spend the night here individually, but also with a large group. Are you only coming for a day trip? Then you can go to the Smockelaer for a Burgundian meal with products from the region. You deserve such a tasty meal after a brisk hike.

The region through which you walk, belongs for the most part to the Crapoel plateau. This plateau consists of a continuous chain of hills with an average height of 200 meters. The route takes you past hillside forests, special half-timbered houses and rare chalk grasslands. Typical of this landscape are the sunken roads, which were created by rainwater that flows down from the slopes and hollows out a road in the landscape. In Eperheide you pass Mergelland sheepfold. Local products such as lamb and wool products are sold here.
