Quiet route from Halsteren along Steenbergen, Nieuw Vossemeer and back along the Scheldt-Rhine canal.
On the route you see the polder landscape of Brabant, drive along dikes and see some small towns and villages in the west of North Brabant. You pass the town of Steenbergen, where you can simply drive to the center for an ice cream or lunch in the pleasant shopping street in the center. From there you go via a piece of the old water line, Fort Hendrikus (point 45) and via Notendaal to Nieuw-Vossemeer. Here the route takes you through the small old center past a few eating and drinking places.
The route then leads along the sea dike along the Scheldt Rhine Canal. This is an area where no cars are allowed and it is closed off with a cattle grid: sheep always graze freely here (so not suitable for dogs). Incidentally, the Scheldt Rhine Canal here has a rather rough side with islands: not channel-like at all anymore. It is a sheltered area with dikes, sheep and trees. Very idyllic. After this you will come across a piece of the old Scheldt in the polder landscape near point 53.
You then return to Halsteren via the polder, where you return to the starting point via the Dorpstraat, two churches (Sint Martinus and Sint Quirinus) and some taverns. Along the way you will pass Landgoed de Beek, a former home of the wealthy De Ram family.
On the route: the RC churches of Steenbergen (Sint Gummarus, 1903) and Halsteren (Sint Quirinus, 1914) were built by the same architect: Jos Cuypers.
Points of attention: the transition from route point 62 to 56 (Halsteren-Klutsdorp) is not (yet?) properly marked after the construction of the A4. At the traffic lights from Halsteren you have to go straight ahead (motorway on the right) until you see a sign on the right"cyclists Steenbergen\\\". Follow this sign and the road crosses the A4. Later on, after the transition at the Stierenweg, you see that the route continues to the left to point 55. At Nieuw Vossemeer, the transition to route point 50 is also a point of attention: you can easily drive past the sign. The route is also clearly marked.
Tip: do not drive to point 12 on the roundabout in Halsteren and back to Dorpstraat in Halsteren, but turn left directly from Thoolseweg into Dorpsstraat.
Points of interest (churches) are marked on the map with a location dot.
