RvN 04 (alt) Rondje Medemblik

The route starts at the station of the (museum) Steam Tram Hoorn-Medemblik. This cycling route takes you from Medemblik, the oldest town in West Friesland. You will also drive a bit through the vast Wieringermeerpolder and along the IJsselmeer.
Medemblik
Medemblik received city rights from Count Floris V in 1289. The town grew into a prosperous port city. You can still see this rich history in the many beautiful facades, but also in Radboud Castle. Only two residential wings of this thirteenth-century castle can be admired. In 1939, Rembrandt's The Night Watch was temporarily brought to safety in this castle, before it was moved to a bunker in the dunes near Castricum in May 1940.
Authentic bell-shaped farmhouses
The West Frisian lowlands and the Wieringermeerpolder are ideal for exploring by bike. You drive through a mix of damp meadows, ditches and high skies. The picturesque Twisk enjoys a protected village view. It has a high concentration of authentic bell-shaped farms. The large village church dates from the fourteenth century.
Twisk station
The monumental Twisk Station still stands in the hamlet of't Westeinde (just outside Twisk). This station dates from 1887 and is located on the Hoorn-Medemblik railway line, which also opened that year. Until 1936, the operation was in the hands of the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij, the first railway company in the Netherlands. Nowadays a tourist steam train runs over this track (from Museum Stoomtram Hoorn-Medemblik).
Then via Opperdoes (you know: from the Opperdoezer round, the potatoes with a protected designation of origin) back to Medemblik.
