Description
Keukenhof is an estate of more than two hundred hectares with beautiful bulb gardens. Also visit Keukenhof Castle, where you can see how the nobility used to live. Then you drive past the bulb fields and the beautiful Kagerplassen. The Kagerplassen consists of 12 different lakes that are surrounded by a network of small reed ditches and waterways. The only inhabited island is Kaageiland, with about 400 inhabitants. You will see mills in abundance here: this wetland area needs them badly. The municipality of Kaag en Braassem even has the most mills (20) of all municipalities in the Netherlands! Leiden has the oldest university in the Netherlands and is known for its rich history and the old city center with canals, monumental buildings and courtyards.
