Historical tour: Hoensbroek Castle and Sittard

Your route starts on the nice terrace of Bie de Veldwachter in Amstenrade. Nearby you will discover the highlight of the route (and the wider region): Hoensbroek Castle, one of the largest castles in the Netherlands. And one of the most beautiful! There was a motte on this site as early as around 1225. Due to its strategic location on the trade routes to Maastricht, Aachen and Cologne, this original castle developed into the largest castle between the Maas and the Rhine. You cycle towards Sittard via the beautiful Geleenbeek valley. You pass close to Terborgh Castle, a nice place to poke around. In the old center of Sittard you will find many beautiful buildings, but also some historic city gardens. Nice to get off and enjoy the atmosphere!
