Historical tour: Hoensbroek Castle and Sittard

Your route starts on the pleasant terrace of Bie de Veldwachter in Amstenrade. Nearby you will discover the highlight of the route (and the wider region): Hoensbroek Castle, one of the largest castles in the Netherlands. And one of the most beautiful! There was already a motte on this spot around 1225. Due to its strategic location on the trade routes to Maastricht, Aachen and Cologne, this original castle developed into the largest castle between the Maas and Rhine. You cycle towards Sittard via the beautiful Geleenbeekdal. You will pass Terborgh Castle right by, a beautiful place to browse around. In the old centre of Sittard you will find many beautiful buildings, but also some historic city gardens. Nice to get off and soak up the atmosphere!
