Walking through Borger

On foot you have plenty of time to view the Drenthe village of Borger at your leisure. In the outlying area you pass through the old hamlet of Westdorp. And you can view the largest hunebed in the Netherlands.

Westdorp
You will notice that Borger is located on the Hondsrug when you walk out of the village. You gradually descend a few meters. You walk through a landscape of fields, grasslands and tufts of forest to Westdorp, a hamlet consisting of a green and a few farms. You can also walk a bit along the Buinen-Schoonoord Canal. This sixteen kilometer long waterway was dug between 1926 and 1930, it was a job creation project. Since 1966 only pleasure boats have been sailing on the canal.

Borger
Via a bridge you walk into the cozy Borger. You can admire a few beautiful historic buildings here, such as the beautiful medieval tower of the Willibrord Church. Due to its dilapidated state, the church itself was demolished in the early nineteenth century and replaced by the current Waterstaatkerk. A little further on is the former mayor's residence, a striking villa from 1900. The route ends at Restaurant & Pannenkoek-play farm De Deugniet: you can enjoy a pancake or other dish from the menu here.

The Hunebed Center
If you are in Borger, you can of course take a trip to D27, the largest hunebed in the Netherlands. A visit to the Hunebedcentrum, located a stone's throw away, is also more than worthwhile. In this beautiful archaeological museum you will learn everything about the dolmens and their builders. You can see, among other things, the complete inventory of dolmen D26, excavated in 1970.
